Also known as a Reader or Reading Pipe, this is one of the very earliest pipe shapes and still remains popular.

The story goes that Churchwarden pipes were named after night watchmen, from the time when church doors were never locked. As smoking was not allowed inside church buildings, these pipes were fitted with exceptionally long stems so the pipe could hang out of an open window and the smoke would waft away into the great outdoors.

The overall length of the fishtail mouthpiece ensures a pleasant cool smoke particularly suitable for an evening's relaxation.

Like the Specialty series, Peterson's Tavern line offers a selection of trim, lightweight designs that eschew the Irish marque's usually robust shaping aesthetic in favour of something more petite. Taking inspiration from clay tavern pipes of old, these pieces are fitted to lengthy, demi-Churchwarden stems that ensure a relaxed, comfortable smoking posture. The series is represented here by this handsome Semi Bent Rhodesian shape, dressed in a craggy rusticated finish and accented with a nickel band.

Since 1945, we have crafted a range of Churchwarden pipes. Modelled after the old clay tavern pipes of yesteryear, they are among our most slender and elegant designs, featuring a number of smaller bowl shapes paired to elongated fishtail mouthpieces, and available in a variety of finishes.
